Vanja Sandell Billström (b. 1983) works as an artist and filmmaker based in Stockholm, Sweden. With both documentary methods and active stagings, she often uses the everyday as a practice, where the filming itself is part of the thinking process. With precise decisions about image, sound and temporality, she creates a film language that is in communication with both the people who act in front of the camera and those who watch.
In 2017, she started to collaborate with the filmmaker and artist Lucia Pagano, which resulted in the film Park, which was nominated for both Startsladden at the Gothenburg Film Festival, Tempo Short Award and 1 KM Film at the Stockholm Film Festival in 2020. The film “The Photographer” was nominated for both the Guldbagge award for best Swedish short and for Startsladden at the Gothenburg Film Festival. Between 2009-2104 she studied at Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and has since then shown her work at different venues such as Göteborg Konsthall, Supermarket Art Fair, Galleri Box and Färgfabriken.
